Surgery privatised

The surgery in Barnard Road has been taken over by a private Company, ChilversMcCrea, in co operation with the Chelmsford Primary Care Trust. The surgery which currently has about 700 patients was previously based in a one bedroom flat. It has now been extended to incorporate the premises next door and the PCT has spent more than £100,000 on improvements and refurbishing work. The firm now running the centre is planning to expand the practice by taking on more patients. The practice has a nurse practitioner who can issue prescriptions as well as a GP and practice nurse. The scheme is one of the first of its kind in the country.

John Turkentine elected Council Chairman

John Turkentine was elected chairman of the Parish Council in May this year. He was born in Diss and came to Chelmsford as an engineering apprentice at Crompton Parkinson in 1955. When the firm closed in 1966 he joined The English Electric Valve Co. where he set up a measurement, standards and calibration facility and later became Company Quality Assurance Manager. He came to live in Barnard Road in 1972 with his wife Gladys and children Graham and Sandra. When Gladys died in 2000, John joined a bereavement group where he met Jean Kemp, a widow. Jean had been very much involved in History and the Open University, which awakened John's dormant interests in photography and Family History, so they joined the Galleywood Historical Society, and became volunteers for Images of England, photographing listed buildings in Essex and Cambridgeshire. Jean sadly died, after a short illness, in January 2003. Looking for a new direction, John joined the Village Design Statement team in March that year and this led to a full commitment to local council work and he was elected Chairman in May 2004.

Tragedy after school

Tomas Wren was walking home from Great Baddow High School when he was in collision with a motor bike. Fellow students witnessed the accident in which Tomas suffered a serious head injury followed by cardiac arrest. He was taken to Broomfield Hospital by air ambulance but later died. His family and teachers at the school described Tomas as lively, open and full of life. Head Teacher, Roger Hunton said, ‘He was willing to tell you everything. He always had an intelligent opinion about things and would always say 'hello' to you in the playground. We can't believe it's happened, but we've got to be strong and show we are a loving community and support his family.

Council co opts two new members

In March this year, the Parish Council filled two vacancies by co-opting two new members. Jill Bellamy was born and bred in Galleywood. Her hobbies include gardening, art and design and she is a member of the Horticultural Society and Galleywood Social club. She is also a member of Well Lane Methodist church where she helps with the Sunday School and Thursday Fellowship meetings. Also joining the Council is Bernard Cooper. Married to Frances with two grown up children and three grandchildren, Bernard moved to Chelmsford in 1968 and to Galleywood in 1981. He is a member of the Short Mat bowls club and Galleywood Historical Society and undertakes voluntary work for the Essex Wildlife Trust at the Hanningfield Visitor Centre.

Grapevine Launch

The Parish Council has launched a Parish Newsletter under the title Galleywood Grapevine. The four page sheet is printed on glossy paper with colour illustrations. It is to be distributed free, throughout the Parish, by volunteers. In the introduction Chairman, Janette Potter writes: 'The object of this often talked of periodical is to provide information and news about the village, the Community and the efforts by the Parish Council, on behalf of parishioners, to improve services.'

The first issue carried an appeal from community policeman, PC James Gilchrist for anonymous reporting under the National Crime Stoppers Campaign. Phil Spencer was photographed receiving a specially designed Rose bowl in recognition of his many years of dedicated work as transport manager for Galleywood Community Care Association.
