Parts of Barnard Road and Watchouse Road were cordoned off after contractors laying communications cables cut through a gas main. Supply to six homes was cut off and residents over a wide area complained of a smell of gas. The contractors claimed that the main was half the normal depth for this sort of service, but British Gas were not prepared to accept this excuse. They maintained that the pipe had to cross a water main at that point and this was clearly marked on the local services map. The Fire and Rescue services stood by for most of the night and the Parish Council chairman and vice chairman served them with refreshments from the Parish Emergency Centre.
